Psalm 119:7
Praise God With Uprightness of Heart

By David Phillips

Psalm 119 is a tribute to the law of God. It not only glorifies God, but exalts His word to its proper role in life of the man of God. “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart!” (vs. 1-2) “Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them. The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (vs. 129-130).

The only way to seek God is to seek His will; the only way to know Him is to do His will as revealed in His word (1 John 2:3). Many are those who offer up praise to God, but do not do so with an “upright heart” (Matt. 15:8-9; Rom. 10:3).

How do we praise God with “uprightness of heart”? Do we seek intense emotions when we worship Him? Do we play moving music to strike at the chords of our heart? Do we offer great sacrifices to show God how much we love Him? The Psalmist mentions none of these. But one thing he does mention, “I will praise You with uprightness of heart, when I learn Your righteous judgments.”

Those with upright hearts seek the will of God in all things. They delight in God’s law (vs. 47), are willing to be corrected by His word (vs. 59-60), and are willing to flee that which God disapproves (vs. 37).

When we are filled with great zeal and fervor for God it can be easy to overlook the details of His word (1 Chron. 13:8). When are filled with great joy and zeal, let us focus those emotions in such a way so as to approve God’s will rather than overlooking it (Rom. 12:2; John 4:24). Let us praise Him according to all of His righteous judgments.
